Order in Council, 10 June 1843. Declaring that the doubloon of Spain, Mexico, or the States of South America shall circulate at the rate of 64s. sterling; the French gold piece of 20 francs at the rate of 15s. 10d. sterling; the silver dollar of Spain, Mexico, American or South States, at the rate of 4s. 2d., and the piece of 5 francs at the rate of 3s. 10d. sterling.

Order in Council, 30 June 1852. Declaring that the gold coins of the United States are to pass current. The eagle at the rate of 41s., the half eagle at the rate of 20s. 6d., and the quarter eagle at the rate of 10s. 3d. sterling.

The above Order in Council published at the Gambia on 13 November 1852.

Order in Council, 28 November 1874. Providing that the Belgian, Italian, and Swiss silver five-franc piece, of legal weights and fineness equal to French five-franc pieces, shall pass current at the rate of 3s. 101d.

Local Ordinance, No. 2 of 1880. To demonetzie the Spanish, Mexican, and South American silver dollars.

Coins in circulation are English and French and a few Spanish and Portuguese copper coins.

Amount of coin in circulation from 20,0001. to 30,0001. No paper currency in circulation.

The accounts are kept by the Government and by British merchants in sterling, and by French merchants in francs and centimes.

GOLD COAST.

The three Orders in Council of 10 June 1843, 30 June 1852, and 28 November 1874 (see Gambia).

Ordinance No. 2 of 1880. To demonetize the silver dollars of the United States, Spain, Mexico, and the States of South America, and other foreign silver coins. Sec. 2. Provides that in previous contracts the term dollar shall be deemed to mean 4s. 2d.

Sec. 3. Provides that after 10 days only the coins specified in Schedule A. shall in future be a legal tender,

Copper coins are not much used.

Cowries are practically no longer used for barter. They are still used in the market place at Accra, and other towns of the eastern district for the purchase of articles of little value, the natives not having yet become accustomed to the copper coinage.
